This is a fine printer to buy if your old one dies in the middle of a critical project. The print quality is good, and it's so inexpensive that it will pay for itself quickly -- in the short term. Also, the software permits a "toner saver" mode if you print lots of drafts or stuff for internal use. I did find the power consumption and paper curling issues that other reviewers have noted. But aside from some occasional mishaps doing two-sided copying, I grew to ignore these despite heavy use over a few months.
The HL2040 printer is less attractive after your "starter" toner cartridge runs out. For some of its other printers, like my old HL1240, Brother offers high-yield (6000-page) cartridges. But the cartridge for this printer (TN350) maxes out at 2500 pages. At Amazon's current prices, that comes out to almost 2x the price per page compared to high-yield. Also, the TN350 can be hard to find even at office superstores, so be sure to order some spares online before you need them.

I got this printer yesterday, and will update this review if I encounter any problems, but so far everything has been absolutely beautiful. I had a painless install/setup, and it printed quality work immediately. There was no curling of any pages, and no break-down while printing well over than 100 pages back-to-back. I do not use heavy weight paper (I use the 20 lb stuff), and I saw no curling at all. The print speed was much faster than the Epson C82 inkjet I was replacing (which died unceremoniously over the weekend). I selected this model because it was available from an electronics superstore here in California for less than $90 after $30 rebate, and I calculated it's toner cost per page as being one of the lowest out there ($43/toner for 2500 pages at 5% black comes to about 1.7 cents/page).
