Header: Brother HL-5170DNLT Laser Printer with Crisp Text and Graphics

Why I Bought It
Simple. Low printer price, high paper capacity, great resolution, and reasonably priced toner and drum.
The Brother HL-5170DNLT produces crisp text and graphics at up to 21 pages per minute. Resolution reaches 2400 x 600 dots per inch thanks to Brother's HQ1200 technology. The HL-5170DNLT automatically switches between PCL6, BR-Script 3 (PS/3 emulation), Epson FX and IBM Proprinter emulations. Connectivity is equally as flexible, with automatic switching between Parallel, USB 2.0 and 10/100 BaseT Ethernet interfaces.
The HL-5170DNLT's versatile paper handling allows you to input 550 sheets at a time with two 250-sheet trays and a 50-sheet multi-purpose tray opening in the front. The printer automatically duplexes for two-sided printing.
Pros
The printer is very easy to setup and use with an installation CD and "Quick Setup Guide" that steps you through the various configurations (Parallel, USB 2.0, or 10/100 Ethernet) and installs a quick help guide directly onto your pc.
The HL-5170DNLT is very versatile. It has two paper trays and a multi-purpose tray for envelopes, cards, and various sizes of paper. It also automatically switches into power saver mode. The memory is also expandable.
Cons
The only negatives so far have been the need to change toner after approximately 6,700 pages with the high yield cartridge (cost between $60 and $70) and the drum after approximately 18,000 to 25,000 pages (cost between $100 and $130).
Personal Experiences
The printer was packaged well and incurred no damage during shipping. Brother recommends you save the shipping carton in case you ever have to return the printer for repairs. The quick setup instructions are on the top and guide you through first unpacking the lower paper tray then "stacking" the main unit on top of the lower tray. Quick setup then lets you follow a "flow diagram" to determine which setup you will use (ie: network, parallel, or USB). I chose the network setup and followed the instructions and soon had the printer configured for the network. I had to install the printer drivers two times. Its seems during the software load, the drivers did not install correctly so I used the Windows menu for printer setup and was able to extract the drivers from the setup CD.
Have I had any problems? I caused the printer to jam once by feeding a test envelope through from the multi-purpose tray twice. It curled slightly on its first pass through the printer and that caused it to catch either on the toner cartridge or fixing assembly during the second pass through. I opened the front of the printer, pulled out the toner cartridge, and the envelope came out with the cartridge. I removed the envelope, replaced the toner cartridge, and was able to go right back to printing within about 15 seconds. More operator error than a printer problem. I have printed approximately 3,000 pages so far and am very happy with the output.
One thing that makes me laugh is when the printer is duplexing. The page comes out of the printer as if it is complete. Just as you would expect the printer to release the page, it "sucks" it back in and prints on the back side of the page. I have tried to grab the page as it comes out thinking it was complete an was surprised when the printer pulled it back out of my hand!
