This printer has network options which came in very handy, and were one of the reasons I got the printer - my old Laerjet 1000, was not compatible with OSX and going to XP just to print was becoming a pain.
While I saw other lower priced multi-function devices, and others in the Brother line with similar functions they had very MIXED reviews - some major perks were not only network printing, but network scanning/faxing as well.
Print quality is on par with my LaserJet 1000 laser, and quick, even coming out of sleep mode it is about 5 seconds to full boot-up and print of the first page.
Scan quality is not GREAT, but it works, I have seen higher quality with stand-alone units, but it it is tweakable from the configuration tool, even then not CRISP, but it's good for what I'd consider a "Draft" quality scan, good for faxing/copies or casual scanning.
Duplex copy is nice too, just load up the ADF, setup your duplex method and it'll do two sided copies! So nice, good support for all major operating systems, currently working on Mac (10.4.x), Windows XP, Windows Vista, and Linux (Ubuntu 7.04).
The biggest perk for most folks is you don't have to have a computer on to Copy/Fax - or for the workgroup/home-network, you don't need a computer to "share" the printer, just plug in a network cable to your router/switch and it is instantly shared.
For the price, maybe not perfect for the average home user - for small home business, does wonders.

Strengths: Very fast; duplex capability; USB, Parallel, and ethernet connections; supports up to legal size documents and its a laser.
Weaknesses: No color support, but those run another $300 at the minimum.
Summary: We purchased this product about 3 months ago. We bought this product because my wife wanted the duplex capability for home-schooling. We love the speed and ease of us for this product. We have a 4ppm HP Laserjet 4P that I bought while in college 12 years ago. 30ppm is so much faster. When I print a document less than about five pages on this printer, it is normally done before I walk over to it. The duplexer works flawlessly. It even scans and copies duplex automatically.
The startup control center is fully capable of controlling the printer from your computer. It is possible to scan directly to a file, image, or OCR. It will also send a PC fax or make copies from the computer, although these both seem to be easier to do at the printer itself.
I liked the idea of hooking this printer to our network via an ethernet cable, but our router is upstairs and this printer is downstairs. So, instead of spending the extra $100+ for the flagship model that has wireless, we spent $100 on a Dlink DPR-1260 to hook the printer into our wireless network. This printer does fine on our wireless network. Just be aware that most print servers do not support scanning, you will have to unplug the printer from your print server and directly into your computer. Although, I haven't tried using scanning while using an ethernet connection to my laptop.
