Header: Finally, a CD/DVD printing solution from HP!,

I've been using an Epson R300 for a while for its CD printing facilities. Epson's printers have been pretty much the only game in town when it comes to inkjet printable Cds, so I've put up with it until now. When I found out about the D5160 I *rushed* out to buy one. It just happened to be dirt cheap which made the deal all that much sweeter.

Why do I hate Epson printers so much? I've been using them since the original Stylus Photo, and absolutely nothing has changed. My R300 had the exact same problems: poor paper loading and frequently clogging print heads if you don't print frequently. Add a new twist with the CD printing: the printer had trouble grabbing the CD tray. Ugh.

HP printers like the D5160, in contrast, don't have as many ink clogging issues because every time you buy a new ink cartridge, you are buying a new print head. And on the paper loading side, I've never had problems with HP's front-loading mechanisms. It's also such a nice space saving design compared to the Epson that took up half my desk. The D5160 has no problems taking the CD tray. Ahh, bliss. Another plus is the D5160 has a USB 2.0 card reader. The R300's was USB 1.1.

The only negative I can say is, when running Vista, you are forced to download the software from the web. The "full" web software package does not seem to include a tool to print onto Cds. I generally make up my CD labels in photoshop, this nudged me to get myself set up with a working template. So really it's a good thing as it will save me time being able to print directly from Photoshop. I have printed many Cds with my new printer and have not experienced any issues with scratching. I'm not even sure how the bottom of the CD could become scratched in the caddy.

Header: My experience with DVD printing

I bought this printer for printing DVD's. I have printed about 30 dvd's so far and am reasonably satisfied.

I print five lines of text, not whole disks. On the properties page, under Ink Volume, I reduce it by one click. The ink used so far does not show up at all on the status...still full.

It takes about 30 seconds to print a dvd. Print quality, except for below, is good.

However, there are some problems:

Software install is disgustingly slow. This is inexcusable for a professional level product.

When I first got the printer and printed solid black text, it was somewhat blurry. I contacted HP customer support and they were excellent. They emailed me a test sequence to run, determined that the hardware was bad, all within a few hours. They offered to replace it, but I had just bought it from a local vendor and took the emails to them and they did a swap for a new printer. The new printer works perfectly.

If the disk is rotated at all in the carrier, it will show scratch marks, even though the carrier feels very smooth. Perhaps it's the type of plastic used.

I have an HP color laser and it's fantastic. This product is pretty good(seems to be better than Epson), but not up to the engineering quality level of the laser.
